Fraction Calculator
Add, subtract, multiply, and divide fractions with automatically simplified results.
About this tool
Fraction arithmetic trips people up because addition and subtraction need a common denominator while multiplication and division do not. This calculator performs all four operations exactly, using integer arithmetic throughout, and always reduces the answer to lowest terms.
Results are shown three ways: as a simplified fraction, as a mixed number when the value exceeds one, and as a decimal. The simplification uses the greatest common divisor, so 4/8 becomes 1/2 and 15/9 becomes 5/3, displayed as 1 and 2/3.
Frequently asked questions
How do you divide fractions?
Multiply by the reciprocal: a/b divided by c/d equals a times d over b times c. The calculator does this and then simplifies.
Why does my answer look different from my textbook?
Both are likely correct. 6/8 and 3/4 are the same number; this calculator always gives the fully reduced form.
