Discount Calculator
Calculate the sale price and amount saved from any percentage discount, including stacked discounts.
About this tool
Percent off signs are designed to be read fast, not calculated precisely. This tool gives the exact sale price and the exact dollar amount you save, which is the number that actually matters when comparing deals across stores.
Stacked discounts are the classic trap: 25 percent off followed by an extra 20 percent off is not 45 percent off. The second discount applies to the already reduced price, so the true combined discount is 40 percent. Enter both percentages and this calculator applies them in sequence, the way the register will.
Frequently asked questions
How do stacked discounts combine?
Multiplicatively. Two discounts of 25 and 20 percent leave you paying 75 percent times 80 percent, which is 60 percent of the original, a combined 40 percent off.
Is a bigger discount always the better deal?
Only when the original prices are equal. Compare final prices, not percentages, when the items differ.
